Lighting at the ship-building facilities of BVT at HMNB Portsmouth has been greatly improved by the installation of long-life, energy-efficient Brilliance fittings from Chalmor. Savings in energy and maintenance are expected to provide a payback of just over a year. Brilliance fittings have been installed in a 4000 m2 extension to production hall B and replaced fittings in the 11 900 m2 steel-production hall. In the steel-production hall, 185 x 400 W SON fittings have been replaced point-by-point by Brilliance fittings, each with four 54 W lamps. The electrical load has been nearly halved and lighting levels increased by 25%. The life of the Brilliance fittings is at least 24 000 h, two to three times longer than SON source. Total annual savings on cost of ownership are predicted to be 60%, with a payback of 13 months. Hall B is currently lit with 1000 W SON fittings, and the original proposal for the extension was to use 1000 W metal-halide fittings. Instead, BVT has opted for six 80 W Brilliance fittings are a height of about 40 M, considerably reducing the lighting load. Overall costs, including maintenance, will be more than halved. These fittings use special long-life lamps with a life of 48 000 h, and the payback for this area is predicted to be 14 months.
