Grundfos Pumps scoops National Business Award

Grundfos Pumps has won the Environmental Business Award of the National Business Awards — established three years ago to recognise and reward excellence, best practice and innovation in the UK business community. Grundfos was shortlisted alongside BP, Unilever, Cardiff Harbour Authority and Rockware Glass and won through to the final presentation at Grosvenor House in London following a 3-round selection process. Pumps account for 20% of world energy consumption, and Grundfos is committed to maximising the energy efficiency of its systems. A significant number of new-product developments and extensive media and education programmes have seen sales of variable-speed pumps double in the UK over the last two years so that they now account for 20% of all appropriate sales. However, Grundfos observes that the UK lags behind Europe, where appropriate sales are 35%, and rising. Grundfos’s environmental credentials include being at the forefront of developing variable-speed technology, being ISO 14001 accredited, being committed to constantly improving products and processes and developing long-term strategic plans to encourage sales of variable-speed pumps and renewable-energy alternatives. One of the obstacles to the take-up of pumps with variable-speed drives is that the specifier is not the end user and so does not pay the energy bills, which is typically 80% of the life-cycle cost.
