Waterwise treats rainwater for cooling-tower make-up

Waterwise
The key to using rainwater as make-up water for cooling towers at a distribution centre is Waterwise’s Filtex water-treatment system.

Harvested rainwater will be used to provide make-up water for cooling towers serving refrigeration plant at the Co-op’s new distribution centre at Birtley near Newcastle. The water will be treated by a Filtex ozone system made by water-treatment specialist Waterwise.

The Filtex system uses electricity to generate ozone from air to destroy all bacteria, including legionella, without needing chemicals or biocides. The system also incorporates cyclone filtration to remove suspended matter introduced by rainwater, avoiding the need for additional pre-treatment and filtration.

Jon Fielder, technical director of Waterwise Technology, explains, ‘Collecting and re-using the rainwater not only reduces operating costs for the Co-op but also protects the local environment from large quantities of rainwater run-off normally associated with similar developments.’
