Lindab Safe Click is an educational success

Lindab, spiral ductwork, leakage
The fast-installation and low-leakage benefits of Lindab Safe Click fittings for spiral ductwork have reduced installation time for a project at Orpington College.

The benefits of Lindab’s latest innovation in ductwork fittings have been put to good use in the new 5-storey teaching and IT centre at Orpington College in Kent. Air supply for the building flows from the main rectangular header ducts through a fan-assisted Tarmac Termodeck system that provides thermal mass to provide low-energy comfort. Air that has been tempered by passing through the floor is distributed via Lindab spiral ducts and discharged into rooms through air valves at high level.

All bends, tees, elbows and other fittings in the spiral ductwork are Lindab Safe Check.

Alex Gaeta of installer Air Quality Services explains, ‘With over 300 branches on the system, each fitted with a volume-control damper, it was essential that the spiral ductwork be installed quickly and with maximum air tightness.

‘Lindab Safe Click has enabled us to achieve both these targets, and the fact that it needs no sealant and so few screws has given us a neater finish into the bargain.’

Presealed Lindab Safe fittings are connected to ducts by interlocking notches created on site with the aid of a special Lindab cutting bench. Duct and fittings simply slot together without the need for special tools.

A recent test programme by BSRIA showed a halving of installation time for Lindab Safe compared with the traditional approach and a 20% cost saving. The test programme also showed a reduction in leakage of over 40% at 500 Pa.
