Daikin water-cooled VRF chosen for new World Cup stadia in South Africa
To provide flexibility of use for two stadia that will stage matches in the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Daikin water-cooled VRV sir-conditioning systems are being installed instead of large-capacity central chiller plant. They are the Green Point Stadium in Cape Town and the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth. The installations will comprise 170 outdoor and 351 indoor units.
The new stadia are designed as multi-purpose facilities in which layouts vary considerably from event to event, so the requirement was for energy-efficient systems that could be precisely controlled and flexible enough to provide air conditioning for each area individually.
The 68 000-capacity Green Point Stadium will host semi- and quarter-final matches, among others. It is the first ‘intelligent’ stadium in South Africa and will have 63 Daikin outdoor and 113 indoor units.
The 48 000-capacity Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium will host quarter-final, third-place consolation and some other matches. It has been fitted with 107 outdoor units and 238 indoor units.
