A just case for energy-efficient lighting in Exeter Crown & County Court

Court
Energy-efficient lighting makes an important contribution to the overall energy efficiency of this new court at Exeter.
Energy-efficient lighting based on luminaires from Whitecroft Lighting makes an important contribution to achieving of a ‘very good’ rating in the Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment (BREEAM) scheme in the new Exeter Crown & County Court. Wherever possible, compact fluorescent and T5 linear fluorescent lamps have been used. In some areas, they have been combined with CDM-T lamps to retain efficiency while providing a higher light output where needed. The court is a PFI project and was required to offer low life-cycle costs without compromising on performance. In offices, the greatest challenge was to achieve a glare rating of 16, dictated by the Court Service design team, which is more stringent than the CIBSE design code of 19. Vivant ceiling-recessed downlighters proved ideal in directing light to ceilings and walls, while remaining within the glare criteria.
