Durapipe is put on the case for Walsall Hospital project

The speed and ease of installation of Durapipe pipework products played a key role in meeting a tight project timescale for the redevelopment of Walsall Hospital.

To help M&E installation work for the 4-year £170 million redevelopment of Walsall Manor Hospital keep within the very specific timescale mapped out at the start of the project, a variety of pipework systems from Durapipe were installed. Steve Gaguley of Hilton Building Services, explains, ‘The speed and ease of installation of both SuperFLO and PLX was the deciding factor for this project, and we were not disappointed. It saved us a significant amount of time compared with metal alternatives. Selecting two different systems from the same manufacturer also made the process smoother.’

The project involved outdated buildings being replaced to bring together the majority of clinical services under one room in state-of-the-art facilities that will benefit patients and hospital staff.

SuperFLO in sizes up to 150 mm has been installed to cater for the boosted-cold-water and chilled-water requirements throughout the hospital. The pipework was installed onto prefabricated modules constructed off-site by Skanska Fabrications and then positioned on the roof.

The light weight of SuperFLO makes it easy to handle on site, and the solvent-welding jointing technique eliminates the need for hot works.

Durapipe PLX was specified in two sizes to transfer diesel from the energy centre at the side of the hospital to the day-tank generators on the roof of the building.
