Vacuum-tube collectors help win housing award

Kingspan Renewables, solar thermal

Helping a contemporary social-housing development in Scunthorpe meet Level 4 of the Code for Sustainable Homes are 360 solar-thermal vacuum-tube collectors from Kingspan Renewables. St Catherine’s Mews comprises 14 new homes and won the category for best social or affordable housing development of the South Yorkshire & Humber local authority’s Building Excellence Awards.

Lincolnshire-based consultancy 4eco specified the HP200 Thermomax collectors, which now deliver up to 70% of the residents’ annual hot-water needs.

Robin Barrett, operations director with 4eco, comments, We opted for Thermomax vacuum tubes because the high levels of efficiency and performance they deliver per square metre meant that we needed fewer collectors compared to other brands. The pricing was also extremely competitive.

‘Despite a number of roofs not being in the optimum south-facing orientation, using Thermomax tubes meant that this was not an issue as collectors remained highly effective even on east- and west-facing roofs.’
