Internal ventilation unit has high noise attenuation

Passivent and Arup have developed an approach to enable air to pass from one internal space to another with minimal sound transmission. SoundScoop is described as combining natural ventilation with noise attenuation. It significantly reduces sound transmission from one area to another, whilst enabling low-resistance airflow — essential in naturally ventilated buildings.
SoundScoop is positioned at high level in the partition or wall between two internal spaces. A patented sound-absorbing lining optimises attenuation of mid-frequency sound, typically the most problematic. Accredited laboratory testing has demonstrated that an acoustic performance of up to Dnew44 can be realised.
That level of performance enables the requirements of BB93 to be met in a classroom next to a noisy corridor.
The design uses an ABS sleeve with a foam lining, so units can be packed flat for easy installation. The smallest unit has a 300 mm-square cross section and is 300 mm long with a performance of Dnew31 and average attenuation of 34 dB at mid frequencies. The largest unit is 600 x 300 x 1200 mm with a performance of Dnew42 and an average attenuation of 51 dB at mid frequencies.
