Durapipe PLX helps maintain power for HSBC data centre

Durapipe, pipework
Supporting the standby-power requirements of a new data centre in Yorkshire is Durapipe PLX pipework to transport fuel oil underground from the holding tank to eight bulk tanks and day tanks.

A key role in the operation of a new £150 million data centre for HSBC in Yorkshire is played by the Durapipe PLX pipe-in-pipe specialist fuel pipework system to deliver fuel oil from storage tanks to standby generators in the case of an emergency. M&E contractor ASEE supplied and installed this pipework system for the centre at Normanton.

The pipework is underground, so a system was needed that would ensure fuel oil will not leak into the ground. Durapipe PLX pipework in sizes 50/63 mm and 90/160 mm was installed to carry fuel oil from the 30 000 l holding tank to eight bulk tanks, which in turn supply the day tanks for the generators. PLX has a design life of 30 years.

Stuart Davies of ASEE explains, ‘The product material characteristics and specifically the pipe-in-pipe aspect as it could be monitored with a leak-detection system above ground, was the deciding factor for us, as we needed to be confident we would not be accountable for fuel leaking out into the ground.’
