Tridonic DALI ballasts deliver efficient lighting

Tridonic, lighting control, DALI
Energy-efficient lighting in these new offices of Birmingham City Council is achieved with the help of DALI ballasts from Tridonic.

Tridonic has supplied around 3000 dimmable DALI ballasts via Luminaire UK for Birmingham City Council’s new Woodstock Street office development in Aston. The ballasts are incorporated into luminaires to provide a versatile interface with the lighting-management.

Comprising five floors with 22 000 m2 of office accommodation, it will house over 3000 council workers. Sustainability is at the heart of its BREEAM Excellent design, and the lighting management makes a key contribution — along with CHP, Rainwater harvesting and brown roofs.

The ballasts are being used in luminaires with two 49 W T5 lamps in open-plan areas, along with a range of other T5 and compact fluorescent lamps. Tridonic also supplied all the emergency-lighting control gear.

The workspaces include a combination of fixed workstations and ‘touchdown’ areas, so occupancy varies considerably. The DALI interface enables the lighting to be integrated with occupancy sensors throughout the building so that lighting is on only when required.

Daylight sensors in luminaires near windows control their light output according to daylight levels.
