BSRIA helps collect operational data for new Barratt homes

Detailed monitoring of 185 Barratt homes in Bristol using wireless systems supplied by BSRIA will provide valuable data for future developments.

A detailed 3-year monitoring programme of the consumption of gas, electricity and water of 185 new homes on the outskirts of Bristol will be carried out unobtrusively using Radio-Tech Wi5 wireless monitoring systems supplied by BSRIA Instrument Solutions. The homes are on the Hanham Hall development, and developer Barratt is determined that its homes should be practical and affordable to run, with the intention that tried-and-tested energy efficiency can be replicated elsewhere in time to meet the zero-carbon Building Regulations in 2016.

The homes have one to five bedrooms and will be monitored for three years as each dwelling is completed and inhabited.

A random selection of the homes will be monitored for internal environmental living conditions — including temperature, humidity and CO2 emissions. Also monitored will be the energy used for hot water, the use of harvested rainwater and solarPV electricity sold to the Grid.

The data collected will help assess the energy efficiency of the development and the accuracy of energy predictions for it.

The wireless kits are easily concealed and designed to be hardly noticed by the householders being monitored.
