Lighting costs take a dive at Luton aquatics centre

Lighting controls by presence and absence detectors are helping to reduce costs at the Inspire Luton Sports Village.

Energy-efficient lighting for a new aquatic centre in Luton is provided by CP Electronics’ Vitesse Modular 4 lighting connection system with presence and absence detectors. The £26 million Inspire Luton Sports Village includes a 50 m 8-lane pool with world-class diving facilities, 20 m 5-lane community pool, a large sports hall, gymnasium and dance studio.

One of the key areas addressed by the lighting control system is the variable occupancy of many of the spaces. Specified and installed by MITIE, the CP system has presence and absence detection for a range of spaces in the building, including offices, changing areas and toilets.

In some areas, lighting is switched on manually and off automatically when the space has not been occupied for a preset period of time. In other areas, lighting is switched on and off automatically. Detector sensitivity is adjustable so that the different layouts of each space can easily be accommodated.

Installation of cabling for power and lighting control is greatly simplified by the design of the Vitesse Modular 4 marshalling boxes. They have a spacious wiring compartment for connecting power, and pluggable control inputs and outputs using the pre-wired leads supplied with the detectors.
