Lochinvar solar thermal passes university selection process

DHW for all six floors of this new building of Liverpool John Moores University is supplied by Lochinvar equipment, including solar thermal.

Lochinvar has supplied a solar-thermal system to meet the high demand for hot water in the new city-centre Redmond Building of Liverpool John Moores University. Consisting of a range of social and learning spaces, the 11 500 m2 building has toilet and changing facilities on each of its six floors, with a hot-water requirement throughout the day.

A solar hot-water system integrated with a gas-fired condensing water heater was specified. The Lochinvar equipment includes 12 solar collectors, an HSV thermal store and an EcoCShield gas-fired condensing water heater.

The solar-thermal system was specified by building-services contractor SPIE Matthew Hall to meet a hot-water demand that was expected to be high and as an energy-efficient low-NOx solution.

The storage of DHW in the thermal store is minimal. Under normal operating conditions its basic design will not allow the build-up of legionella bacteria. HSV does not require a pasteurisation regime, which can be a highly energy-intensive process.
