Ability Matrix fan-coil unit is just 190 mm deep

Ability Projects, air conditioning, fan coil unit

Ability Projects has developed a 190 mm-deep Matrix self-balancing fan-coil unit to complement the current 270 and 235 mm-deep units. Matrix units have internal-rotor-motor fan and motor sets with every fan directly coupled to its own motor, making every fan/motor assembly an independent entity and enabling its speed to be individually controlled.

A key feature of Matrix units is the dividing of the discharge plenum into compartments so that each fan and motor assembly supplies air into a single sub-chamber. Each sub-chamber has a single spigot connection that, ideally, serves only one grille — enabling the air volume to each duct and the balance between ducts to be controlled by fan speed alone. Matrix systems, therefore, do not require volume-control dampers, avoiding their associated cost and other issues.

The design air volume for every grille on every Matrix unit is factory programmed.

The inevitable differences in static pressure between the individual ducts on a single Matrix unit are compensated for by a continuously running strategy routine. The strategy stores the relationships between motor speed, motor current and speed.

Air volume can be adjusted using a hand-held tool or the BMS — either to an individual unit or a group of units.
