WEMS helps BT reduce peak electricity demand

WEMS (Wireless Energy Management Systems International) has been awarded a significant contract by BT as part of a major programme to reduce electricity demand at peak times. The project will enable BT to reduce its electricity demand during periods of peak demand, enabling National Grid to use power more efficiently.

WEMS’s wireless technology will monitor the status of engine sets and engine tanks at 415 sites. An automatic and gated switching process controlled by WEMS’s hardware ensures all necessary checks have been made before the generators are started to reduce demand on the grid.

The relationship between BT and WEMS spans 20 years, during which time WEMS has provided advanced energy-management and monitoring technology at over 2300 BT sites and achieved energy savings of £15.8 million a year.
