Ghent University cuts costs with co-generation

CHP plant supplied by Dalkia will play a key role in reducing carbon emissions by the University of Ghent in Belgium.

Dalkia has supplied the University of Ghent in Belgium with two gas-fired CHP plants, each having an electrical output of 238 kW. They serve the Coupure and Ledeganck campuses and will provide electricity, heat and hot water from a single fuel source for lecture theatres, offices and campus facilities.

A stoichiometric natural-gas-fired CHP unit on each campus has a 3-way catalyst to reduce NOx and CO to very low levels. Electricity will be sent to the university’s power grid to supply local users. Waste heat will be captured to provide heating and hot water.

This application of CHP will reduce the use of natural gas, cutting utilities costs and carbon emissions.

The units were designed by the in-house team of Cogenco, Dalkia’s specialist CHP division. Once they are fully operational, they will be serviced by Dalkia’s operations and maintenance engineers as part of a 15-year agreement.
