New Terminal 2 at Heathrow comes into service

Terminal 2, Heathrow

The new Terminal 2 at Heathrow Airport has CO2 emissions 40% less than the buildings it replaces, which were opened by The Queen in 1955. The Queen returned to Heathrow to open the new terminal. The old building, the airport’s first passenger terminal, was demolished after 54 years of service. Luis Vidal + Architects was the concept and lead architect for the £2.5 billion project, which is the latest phase of an £11 billion private-sector investment that has transformed Heathrow for passengers.

This investment includes the construction of Terminal 2A and 2B, Terminal 5A, 5B and 5C, a new control tower and the refurbishment of Terminals 3 and 4.

The new Terminal 2 makes Heathrow the first airport in the world to be awarded a BREEAM rating for its sustainable building design.

The striking roof of the terminal is oriented towards the north and provides a generous amount of natural light, while also reducing solar gain and energy consumption.
