Mechanical contractor Thermal Transfer is part of an alliance team awarded the European Construction Industry ACTIVE ‘Best project of the year award’. It was for the construction of a state-of-the-art laboratory building for AstraZeneca’s Alderley Park research facility in Cheshire. It comprises two highly complex buildings joined by a street housing interaction areas and amenities. The award was presented to AstraZeneca engineering project managers Andy Morton and Allen Palmer by Sir Michael Latham, president of the European Construction Industry. The judges considered the project to be an extremely good example of the engineering industry working together to achieve outstanding performance. They were impressed by the way the alliance team worked closely with the end users of the building to arrive a the best design solution. Thermal Transfer was a key member of the B52 alliance team. Under its £8.8 million contract, the company was responsible for designing and installing the mechanical-services packages for the buildings. Iain Macintosh, Thermal Transfer’s project manager, says, ‘Thermal Transfer had overall project responsibility for the spatial co-ordination of all mechanical, electrical, controls and process services.’ Allen Palmer of AstraZeneca says, ‘The quality of the alliance was greatly dependent on the companies in the team, and the calibre of the people representing Thermal Transfer was of the very highest order.’
