Building-automation systems can respond to gestures or visually identify individuals using Omron’s human vision component (HVC) module. The module can verify the presence of people more accurately than other systems and has the potential to enable basic access-control functions to be integrated with the HVAC system.

Omron’s HVC integrates 10 image-sensing functions with a camera in a module measuring 60 x 40 mm. Developers can detect a human face, hand or body. They can implement face recognition, gender detection, age estimation, mood estimation, facial-pose estimation, gaze estimation and blink estimation. In each case, the module returns a value, with a degree of uncertainty, allowing the programmer to configure the response appropriately for each application.

HVC can easily be integrated into an established system or implemented as part of a new design.

The system offers the potential for a particular individual to be recognised when they arrive at their office and set up heating and lighting just the way they like it.

The module gives developers of building-automation systems face- and gesture-recognition technology without them having to understand the complexities of the underlying algorithms or the optical design. The module is a fully integrated plug-in solution. The developer can look at the outputs and configure the system to make appropriate decisions, depending on their status.
