Hospital prefabricated service units utilise wire-mesh cable tray

Over 30 km of Cablofil wire mesh cable trays is being incorporated into prefabricated service units for Manchester Royal Infirmary.
Cablofil wire-mesh cable trays are being used in modular pre-fabricated services units for Manchester Royal Infirmary, or the Manchester Joint Hospital as it is known. MEP Solutions is supplying the units to Rotary and Balfour Kilpatrick for the £420 million PFI project being built by main contractor Bovis Lend Lease. The units range from a 2D flat-frame system to 3D units measuring 2 m x 2 m x 6 m long. Over 30 km of cable trays will be used to contain power and data cabling. Cablofil was specified by the two M&E contractors following discussions at tender stage with Cablofil. The original specification was for traditional tray and trunking, but this was changed. Consultant DSSR was concerned about the possibility of electromagnetic interference from power lines corrupting data in other cables in the run. Matthew Way of Cablofil explains, ‘EMC test compliance became an issue, but we were able to solve that with Cablofil wire trays. The Faraday Cage effect induced overcomes the problem.’ The hospital is due for completion in three years’ time.
