Airedale TurboChill chillers are lifted by helicopter

Airedale International’s design engineers, service and controls experts formed part of a team managing a complex project to design manufacture and install chillers that involved two 40-minute helicopter lifts onto the roof of the London offices of a global professional-services firm.

Eight TurboChill chillers were designed and made in a total of 18 component parts to meet the 3.2 t lifting capacity of the Super Puma helicopter.

Further design considerations took into account the need for rapid assembly and connection. The design adaptations involved rationalising pipework connection so that the units could be assembled on the roof with 50% less manpower and within a week of each lift.

The chillers offer significant savings in annual operating cost and were supplied with specially designed acoustic packs to meet stringent local-authority noise restrictions associated with the building’s proximity to other offices and hotels.

An Airedale sequence manager maximises the part-load efficiencies and ensures even wear of components.
