Halton Borough Council’s £2 million scheme to create a community sports facility at Widnes Recreation Ground incorporates services designed by Liverpool-based consultant Steven Hunt & Associates. The single-storey scheme includes changing facilities for the existing sports field, along with social space for community activities and storage areas for sports equipment.

The services design includes a heat-pump heating and cooling system for the foyer, social room and meeting room.

Solar-thermal panels will pre-heat two dual-coil 1000 l cylinders for the DHW system.

The ventilation systems have been designed with energy efficiency in mind. Air-handling plant for the changing areas incorporates heat recovery. Heat recovery has also been built into the ventilation system for the social space, staff room and meeting room.

Councillor Phil Harris, Halton Borough Council’s executive board member for sport, says, ‘Ensuring an energy-efficient and sustainable built was an important part of the business case for the project. Steven Hunt & Associates has done an excellent job in answering that brief with a scheme that minimises operational costs while delivering a high standard of comfort and quality.’
