CHP helps heat water for student accommodation

Domestic hot water for student accommodation in Newcastle is now provided by three Senertec Dachs mini-CHP units and two 170 kW Potterton Commercial Eurocondense Three boilers. Portland Green, developed by Metnor Property, has 274 bedrooms over seven floors, with a retail development on part of the ground floor.

One of the main reasons for the upgrade was to reduce the carbon impact of the building, measured by an improvement in its BREEAM rating, with the aim of achieving ‘Excellent’.

The CHP units generate electricity, and heat from the engines goes into the hot-water system.

Stuart Bolam, project manager with Norstead, remarks, ‘The units have lived up to expectations and are delivering efficiency in line with the design. Monthly reports show that the efficiency of the CHP units is around 87%, which we expect will result in a huge saving in electricity costs.’
