Frost protection for a 10 200 m2 distribution centre in Leeds is provided by an air-rotation system designed by Nordair-Niche. The system comprises two IDF19 heaters discharging high volumes of warm air from high-level grilles into the building. They draw in cooler air at floor level and discharge it at high levels, producing an effective mix with the high-level warm air and forcing it down to lower levels. Destratification is avoided, and warmed air is distributed evenly, both horizontally and vertically, without the need for costly ductwork. Multiserve of Stockport, which specialises in this type of installation, completed the project in just 12 days to meet the deadline of 31 January and enable Carlsberg, official beer sponsor of England, to gear up to full capacity at this distribution centre in time for the World Cup. Air rotation is said to achieve high thermal efficiency and provide frost protection with fewer units than other approaches. Siting units at low level reduces maintenance costs, and units can be flued through the wall — eliminating roof penetrations. In summer, the system can be switched over to circulate ambient air to provide ventilation.
