Chatham hotel installs specially developed fan-coil units

Ability fan-coil units specially developed for hotel bedrooms have been installed in the Ramada Encore hotel at Chatham.
Guests at the recently opened Ramada Encore hotel in Chatham are enjoying the benefits of air conditioning provided by Ability Aurora II fan-coil units installed by Tandy Engineering Services of Gloucester. Aurora II was developed following a detailed study of modern hotel air-conditioning performance, installation and commissioning requirements. This work was carried out by Ability Projects, Tandy and Siemens Building Technologies. The study concluded that air conditioning for hotel bedrooms is characterised by short-term cooling and heating cycles, which render the extensive operational capabilities of 4-pipe fan-coil systems largely redundant. The Ability solution is a control-integrated, 2-pipe changeover fan-coil unit installed in the bulkhead above the guest-room doors. They have electric heating and are supplied with chilled or LPHW via heat pump chiller on a seasonal basis as necessary.A wall-mounted Siemens control with an LCD monitors and adjusts room temperature, initiates changeover between heating and cooling and switches the electric heater and 3-speed fan between normal, energy-saving and standby operating modes. The fan-coil unit is started automatically if the room temperature falls to 16°C. The controllers allows occupants to set fan speeds and temperature to their requirements. The control enclosure can be accessed from below. Pipe connections are to the rear and use quick-connect hoses. The remote-control system can be interfaced with a simple time clock, hotel booking system or the room key-card system.
