Innovation in solar energy

Stars of solar energy — Alan Aldridge (left) and Tony Book (right) of Riomay receive the installer of the year award in the British Renewable Energy Association awards from association director Philip Wolfe.
Solar-heating specialist Riomay is installer of the year in the British Renewable Energy Association awards for what is believed to be the largest solar-thermal heating system in the world. The installation at Highbury, former home of Arsenal Football Club, comprises 240 Ecotube evacuated-tube solar panels covering 720 m2 to provide hot water to 711 apartments. The company was also short-listed for the innovator award, and its chairman, Tony Book, was short-listed for champion of the year. Independent laboratory tests have shown the Ecotube produces more than 750 kWh/m2 per year in direct mode, over 40% more than the industry standard.
