Innovative service modules combine chilled beams and micro prism optic luminaires

Refurbishment at Places for People in London represents a major use of SAS active chilled beams with micro prism optic luminaires.

SAS has supplied energy-efficient integrated service modules that include active chilled beams and micro prism optic (MPO) luminaires for a significant refurbishment at the headquarters of Places for People in central London. This is said to be the first major UK project (1700 m2) combining active chilled beams with MPO technology.

The ISMs were specified by Fulcrum. Chris Puttick, the project engineer, comments, ‘The iSMs help us to achieve a number of key design considerations, particularly the exposure of the existing concrete soffit by elegantly combining the electrical and mechanical systems such as the cooling, ventilation and lighting.

‘This helped maximise the space and reduce peak cooling loads. The energy efficiencies and low maintenance requirements of ISMs will significantly reduce the whole-life cost for the system.’

The ISMs in this 3-storey building have been positioned above desks and meeting-room tables to achieve correct environmental control and light levels.

The luminaires are linked to a DALI control system and a combination of passive infra-red presence sensors and daylight sensors minimise energy consumption.
