Lighting control reduces operating costs in Scottish maternity unit

ALC’s Spectrum lighting management system is reducing lighting costs and providing for future changes in this maternity unit in Scotland.

Energy-efficient control of lighting no and in the future for a new maternity unit in Scotland is provided by ALC Lighting Control’s Spectrum lighting management system. Ayrshire Maternity Unit at Crosshouse Hospital in Kilmarnock is the focal point of maternity outpatient facilities throughout Ayrshire and Arran, providing a comprehensive service from a single site.

A key consideration in the specification of the lighting management system was that many spaces in the maternity unit will experience variable occupancy through the day. The lighting-management strategy therefore needs to include occupancy control to ensure that spaces are not lit unnecessarily, which is achieved by linking Spectrum to PIR detectors.

Spectrum’s graphical software will enable the lighting to be reconfigured in the future in response to changing use of spaces without changes to the hard wiring.

Optimised use of lighting through the Spectrum system will extend lamp life, so re-lamping cycles can be extended to reduce maintenance costs and the cost of lamp disposal.
