The energy-efficiency features of Matrix fan-coil units from Ability Projects are contributing to the energy strategy of the Masdar Institute in Abu Dhabi.

The installation of fan-coil units from Ability Projects has been completed for phase 1B of the Masdar Institute complex in Abu Dhabi. The contract involved over 700 Matrix II EC horizontal and vertical unit and represents the second largest order that Ability has fulfilled for this 6 km2 development designed by Foster & Partners. It seeks to use 100% renewable energy, be carbon neutral and generate no waste.

This phase of the development involved the installation of 2-pipe cooling-only units with capacities from 1.3 to 3 kW in mixed residential, laboratory, offices and classrooms for the Masdar University applications. Control of the units’ fresh-air inlets and outlets is provided by Ability via damper actuators that regulate supply and extract based on enthalpy, Vin card entry and occupancy levels in rooms. Each room has a touchscreen display unit to provide an interface with the BACnet based building management system.

Another 17 units are installed in a field station next to boreholes that bring hot water to the system and use it to provide chilled water using absorption chillers.

The units at Masdar have their fan speed controlled according to demand and occupancy. On this phase, many units receive control signals from window switches, enthalpy sensors, time clocks and key cards.
