HFO first for Turbomiser chillers in Milton Keynes

Two chillers with Turbocor compressors using the low-GWP refrigerant HFO1234ze have been installed in a department store in Milton Keynes as part of the end user’s ongoing trials of promising environmentally friendlier technology. Klima-Therm installed the Turbomiser chillers, made by Geoclima — the first Turbomiser chillers to use this refrigerant. Klima-Therm has also received an order for the installation of HFO Turbomiser machines for a major retail development in the south west of England.
Tim Mitchell, sales director with Klima-Therm, said, ‘The HFO Turbomiser is a very attractive combination. In its favour is its exceptional and proven energy performance, which can cut energy use by up to 60%, coupled with the very low global-warming potential of HFO1234ze.’
This HFO refrigerant has a GWP of six, compared with 1300 for HFC134a.
Each chillier in the Milton Keynes project has a cooling capacity of 230 kW and will meet all the cooling needs of the store via a chilled-water air-conditioning system.
Tests carried out by Geoclima indicate a full-load COP of about four.
Cooling capacity is reduced by about 24% compared with R134a across various application conditions. However, the mean power absorbed is about 27% less, giving an overall COP for the HFO slightly better than R134a.
