Dual-fuel boilers can use gas and bio-diesel

Boilers that can burn natural gas and liquid bio-fuel have been supplied by Atlantic boilers for the new Corby Enterprise Centre.

Boilers that can burn gas and bio-diesel have been supplied for the new Corby Enterprise Centre by Atlantic Boilers. This £8.3 million centre comprises 15 workshops, 38 offices and a cafe area. The space-heating requirement is met by two 90 kW R-Series boilers that can burn natural gas and B100 bio-diesel. The boilers were specified by BSD of Corby and installed by Mitchell & Hewitt of Derby.

The R Series are year-round condensing boilers that bridge the gap between gas-fired condensing boilers and bio-mass boilers by being able to burn gas and ‘green’ fuel.

Liquid bio-fuel is easier to store and deliver to the boiler than biomass. It also has a higher calorific value — 37 MJ/kg compared to 17 MJ/kg for good standard biomass. The UK has a surplus of waste and home-grown vegetables.

With liquid bio-fuel, carbon-monoxide emissions are lower than 20 ppm and nitrous oxide is down to 40 mg/kWh.
