New fans for old will pay back in just two years

Replacement fans supplied by Flakt Woods to replace 40-year old units in an Edinburgh Hospital will pay back their cost in less than two years.

Replacing six fans at Western General Hospital in Edinburgh with six bespoke JM axial fans with inverter drives from Flakt Woods will achieve a payback of less than two years through reduced running costs. The original fans ran constantly at an estimated 76% efficiency, whereas the new units are over 93% efficient.

The new fans supply fresh air to the outpatients department. To minimise installation time and costs, the fans were specifically designed to match the dimensions and mounting of the original units.

More energy-saving work is in the offing. Paul Cairns, head of estates at NHS Lothian, said, ‘Based on this installation, we’re now also looking to fit new extract units from Flakt Woods throughout the building.’

The original fans were also supplied by Flakt Woods, and the service for this latest project included disposing of old units, electrical package, project management, engineers and electricians — all with minimal disruption.
