Wireless technology solves control issues in stately home

Stately home
The key to controlling the new heating system in this Victorian mansion applied by The Stove Shop without damaging the building and historic decorations was the use of a Honeywell table-top wireless programmer.
Faced with the requirements when installing central-heating controls in family living areas of a stately home in Devon not to damage historic decorations, no cable holes and no visible wiring, Honeywell wireless programmable thermostats provided the solution. These controls were recommended by The Stove Shop of Liskeard in Cornwall, which designed and installed the new heating system. They were installed much more quickly than wired controls and overcame problems that would have been posed by the vastness of this Victorian mansion, the thickness of its interior walls and the long distances to the two boilers. The boilers are installed in former servants’ quarters on the top floor, along with heating manifolds, control valves and a specially designed wiring centre. The heating system has five zones. Four are for space heating and the fifth is for domestic hot water. Each zone is fed by a Honeywell motorised valve from a common manifold. served by two Worcester oil-fired boilers operating in parallel, each via Grundfos pump. Lead and lag operation is controlled automatically to even out wear. The Stove Shop designed and built a special wiring centre to control the boilers, valves and pumps in response to signals from Honeywell CM60RF programmable thermostats and a Honeywell hot-water cylinder thermostat. Data from additional thermostats in the two return manifolds is used to control boiler and pump switch-off and to close a motorised valve in each boiler return after a pump overrun period. The controllers can be mounted on a wall or placed on a table.
