Southampton hospital doubles CHP capacity

Dalkia, CHP

Dalkia’s upgrade of the energy centre at University Hospital Southampton includes a doubling of CHP capacity to 4 MW(e), increasing the efficiency of the plant from 60% to 80%. The first CHP unit was installed in 2003 at the start of Dalkia’s 20-year contract with the NHS Trust to operate and maintain the energy centre.

High-grade heat from the CHP installation is used to generate steam, and low-grade heat is distributed for hot-water services.

Enhancing the hospital’s energy centre is in line with the NHS carbon-reduction strategy that envisages carbon reduction of 10% against the base year of 2007.

By generating electricity from the CHP units and using the waste heat, the trust estimates that savings of over £30 000 a month are being achieved.
