Elephants at Blackpool Zoo enjoy more efficient space-heating system
The heating system for the elephant house at Blackpool Zoo has been restored to efficient operation following treatment with Sentinel Commercial’s Senticlene 8500 heating-system cleaner. With little more than a regular boiler services in the past 20 years, the heating system was in need of attention, as head of maintenance Jim Christofides explains.
‘We were looking for ways to improve the efficiency of our heating system in the elephant house with a view to reducing costs and carbon footprint. The system was in need of a chemical clean and had become inefficient due to the condition of the internal pipes. With such an old system and because the animals were in residence, we needed to approach the problem with care.’
The system has a capacity of about 1200 l. It comprises two large boilers and fans to blow heat into the elephant house.
The system was first flushed with mains water, followed by a solution of Senticlene 8500 and mains water being added and left to circulate overnight. The system was then drained and flushed until the water ran clear. Importantly, no neutralisation procedure was required because this treatment can be used under pH-neutral conditions. Senticlene 8500 contains special inhibitors to protect metal surfaces, including aluminium, from corrosion during cleaning. Cleaning was carried out by Britewater.
