Interserve wins prison extension contract

Interserve

Interserve has won the contract to design and build an extension to Peterborough Prison. Work has commenced on site and is due to completion in December 2014. Peterborough is a privately operated category B prison and is the only one in the UK to hold both male and female prisoners.

The original prison was designed and constructed by Interserve Construction under a PFI contract and opened in 2005. This new project for the Ministry of Justice is funded by the Government and being handled through the Special Purpose Vehicle, Peterborough Prison Management Ltd.

The latest project comprises a 4-story 292-bed adult-male house block with a mixture of double and single cells. There are also prisoner and staff facilities within a hub, plus adjacent exercise yards. A nearby 2-storey activities building will include education and training facilities for prisoners.

Interserve will make full use of Building Information Modelling on the project. This is the second major use of BIM by Interserve for an MoJ project. The other was the young offenders institution at Cookham Wood — the first adopted pilot Government project on which BIM was used throughout tender and construction stages.
