Cofely to deliver new energy centre for Rampton Hospital
Cofely is to build, operate and maintain a new energy centre at Rampton Hospital in Nottinghamshire. Under the Carbon Energy Fund framework contract, Cofely will guaranteed specified carbon and energy savings, which are projected to save around £112 000 a year.
Due for completion by the end of 2014, the energy centre will provide heating, hot water and electricity. The existing coal-fired boilers will be replaced with a 1 MW biomass boiler, a 1.2 MW CHP engine and three dual-fuel boilers running mainly on gas. A new BMS will also be installed.
The new plant will meet about 87% of total electricity demand. Overall CO2 emissions will be reduced by around 8000 t a year.
The project includes converting from a high-temperature hot-water systems (115°C) to a low-temperature (90°C) district-heating system to improve efficiency and safety.
The hospital’s effluent-treatment plant is being replaced with a modern, automated system that will meet current environmental standards and future expansion of the site.
The project will enable Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust to meet the Governments 34% carbon-reduction target by 2020 — five years ahead of schedule.
