Interserve converts Grand Hotel into student accommodation

From Grand Hotel to student accommodation, with the help of Interserve.

Interserve has completed the £2.3 million refurbishment of a listed hotel in Newcastle upon Tyne city centre to create student accommodation. The former Grand Hotel now includes 66 en-suite bedrooms, 11 kitchens, three lounges, office space and a new lift for disabled access.

Most of the work was focused on the interior, with the Victorian facade being carefully preserved, including the ‘Grand Hotel’ lettering carved into stone.

The university’s in-house design team planned the project — specifying an intelligent BMS, incorporating heating, lighting, power and window controls activated and controlled by card readers in the door of each bedroom.

Students swipe an access card to activate lights and controls in their room, including the thermostat on radiators.

The work included the complete renewable of all boiler plant and the heating systems. Re-routing of pipework means that each bedroom has its own riser.

Electrical wiring was also renewed.
