Troubleshooting HVAC systems

Maintenance, troubleshooting, HVAC

BSRIA has updated its guidance to ‘HVAC troubleshooting’ to replace the ‘HVAC troubleshooting manual’ (AG 25/99). The new guide describes step-by-step procedures to identify and solve common problems within typical HVAC systems. The intention of this guide is to impart a methodology and a basic logical sequence to identify problems experienced on HVAC systems found in most commercial and some domestic premises.

It has been designed so it can be used by engineers and managers with different levels of HVAC knowledge. The troubleshooting procedures are presented in order of the affected system or component. A practitioner should first identify the system and component that is exhibiting symptoms and secondly identify the specific symptoms that are occurring. For each symptom, a number of possible causes is given and an action suggested for each.

Colour-coded sections cover refrigeration, ventilation, heating and common items such as pumps, motors, variable-speed drives and pressurisation units.

Each task is assigned one of three grades to indicate the level of ability required to undertake the action.

This new guide is available as a spiral-bound hard copy or as a pdf.
