New control system saves 75% on bills

New controls for a country house, which included biomass boilers, have reduced energy bills by around 75%.

Face to Face Digital, a systems partner of North BuildingTechnologies, has won the 2014 CEDIA award for best energy-management solution. The project is part of a major renovation of a Grade 1 listed country house dating back to 1425 and has reduced energy bills by 75% from the previous figure of £70 000 a year.

The control system uses North’s ObSys-powered controllers to manage packaged biomass boilers and control oil-fired boilers, pumps and valves.

The control system provides zoned control which compensates for solar gain, heat retention, occupancy and ambient weather conditions. This sophisticated control strategy ensures that the drawdown from the biomass storage tank is as efficient as possible, while maintaining a high level of comfort and fabric protection.

The ObSys system also provides a user interface on an iPad, which gives the client simple colour-coded control of the plant, with settings for eco, comfort and holiday modes, along with calendar and timer adjustment. ObSys integrated with the Control4 AV system and enables the used to adjust temperatures via the Control4 keypads.
