Tesco buying club with Eaton helps suppliers reduce lighting costs

Tesco and power-management company Eaton are helping Typhoo and three other Tesco suppliers save up to 750 MWh an year and cut lighting costs by up to 80% through a buying club developed by Tesco and 2degrees in partnership with the Carbon Trust and Eaton’s Cooper Lighting & Safety business.
Typhoo took part in a 6-month pilot scheme as part of Tesco’s collaborative buying club, which will help suppliers invest in energy-efficient lighting equipment and installations by offering expertise and competitive prices.
As part of the pilot scheme, Typhoo replaced lighting in its 14 700 m2 factory in the Wirral. Cooper Lighting & Safety provided LED and low-energy lighting to Tesco’s buying club, working closely with the installer Briggs & Forrester.
The previous lighting was mainly based on metal-halide, which required regular maintenance and frequent lamp replacement. The replacement solution consists of Litex LEDs with built-in controls in the high-bay areas and weatherproof Tufflite Plus LEDs.
Following this trial, Typhoo is proposing to replace all its lighting in a 4-phase project over two years, enabling the maintenance schedule to be reduced, saving costs associated with replacing lamps.
Base don excellent pilot results, Tesco has rolled out the programme to encourage over 800 suppliers to join in the collaborative scheme. The buying club will provide up to 25% savings on capital expenditure for energy-efficient lighting equipment and installations.
