Timoleon provides new underfloor heating for converted barn
Faced with the huge cost and disruption of replacing an underfloor heating at a Grade 2-listed home in Cambridgeshire, its owners found a solution with Timoleon’s ToronFloor and LowBoard low-profile system.
The converted brick-built barn dates from 1765, and the previous underfloor heating system was suffering from problems of noise, pressure drop and damp spots. The only way to replace the pipework was to take up the ground and first floor, as well as most of the internal partition walls.
The Timoleon solution was suggested by Steve Dunn, director of Pure Plumbing.
The suspended wooden first floor was tackled by taking up the existing carpets and suspending the rolls from the ornate trusses that divide the tall living space. The floor boards were lifted and insulation batts inserted between the 20 by 5 cm joists. The ToronFloor system was then installed across the joists to accommodate 660 m of 12 mm-diameter heating pipes connected to an Axios manifold. (photo.)
The surface was covered by a special foil diffuser lay topped with 6 mm-tick plywood before the carpets were relaid.
1000 m of pipework was installed downstairs using the LowBoard system, which has a total installed depth of just 15 mm. Nine circuits totalling 600 m were connected to an Axios manifold and seven circuits totalling 400 m to another manifold. The manifolds enable zones to be controlled via thermostats and valves.
