Riello replacement burners help drive efficiency for Telereal Trillium
These boilers at a high-profile Government site in Swansea have been given a new lease of life and brought up to the standard of any new boiler on the market with the replacement of their burners with dual-fuel burners from Riello. Three 2.5 MW burners were originally installed in 1982 to meet a demand of around 5 MW with N+1 resilience, enabling heat loads to be met with one boiler off-line for maintenance or repair — and reducing disruption while the burners were replaced.
The refurbishment of these high-temperature hot-water boilers was carried out by Steam Plant Hire (Halesowen) and included new high-efficiency insulation, refractory, control wiring, casings, gas and oil pipe systems and replacement of the obsolete burners. The new burners have achieved the required combustion efficiency, along with improved turndown and low emissions (including NOx).The new burners have a monobloc design which occupies less space than the design of the previous burners with their additional separate air fans and motors and separate control panels.
The new burners were supplied with a Siemens burner-management system that will work with Riello’s electronic CAM technology to enhance combustion efficiency through accurate control of excess oxygen. Further efficiencies will be achieved using oxygen trim control and variable-speed control of the main fan motor, which has been shown to reduce electrical consumption by up to 35% compared to fixed-speed motors.
Boiler ‘efficiency kits’ were selected by Telereal Trillium as part of the burner-management system so that boiler efficiency can be monitored in real time. Information can be uploaded via a suitable Modbus system to enable the BMS to display and monitor current boiler efficiency.
