One day for clean air not enough, says IMechE

On 21st June, national Clean Air Day, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) has stated that the government’s Clean Air Strategy is a missed opportunity.
Jennifer Baxter, head of engineering at the IMechE, says: “The government could have provided greater clarity on how monitoring equipment and systems will be developed in order to inform decision making.”
In a report published in January 2018, the Institution called for a new Clean Air Act which would include ‘coherent and consistent monitoring of transport emissions so that informed targets can be set’.
One of the areas identified in the report, titled ‘A breath of fresh air’ included reducing CO2 emissions from our heating systems. The IMechE also called for monitoring of emissions in ‘all parts of the UK’ to provide a broader range of evidence on the effects of air quality on people.
