Construction managers support nuclear energy

Two-thirds of construction managers are in favour of developing nuclear energy, according to an online poll by the Chartered Institute of Building. Over 400 construction managers were polled. Industry and trade unions recently joined forces to urge the Government to back a new generation of nuclear power stations in the face of global warming and looming blackouts. Nuclear power currently provides 20% of electricity in Britain. This proportion is set to drop to 8% within seven years and to zero by 2035 as aging nuclear power plants are shut down. Faced with the prospect of blackouts by 2012 as electricity output falls and demand rises, the Government is carrying out an urgent review of its energy options, including nuclear plant.
