Humidity-control equipment essential to preserving tobacco and appreciating its quality in the Leaf Room of Gallaher at Weybridge has been replaced by Vapac after over 20 years’ service.
More than 20 years on since Vapac Humidity Control installed humidifiers for tobacco company Gallaher in Weybridge, the company has been called in to replace them. The original units were installed when Gallaher built these premises, complete with air conditioning and humidity control for staff and also to provide close control for the Leaf Room. The Leaf Room is where Gallaher receives samples of tobacco from its plantations around the world, which are examined and smoked before being made into cigarettes and cigars. Temperature and humidity controls are essential to maintain the quality of the tobacco in the Leaf Room. Three Vapac humidifiers from the LE range were selected to replace the five electrode boilers in the roof-top plant rooms. Vapac’s installer Humi-tech carried out the work. Two of the units provide humidification for the offices as part of the air-conditioning system and run for 13 h a day with a temperature of 21°C and 45% RH. The other unit serves the leaf room, which is continuously kept at 15°C and 65% RH. Ray Crowle, Vapac’s sales and project engineer, says, ‘It was quite a surprise to discover that the units were 20 years old and an endorsement of the robustness and durability of our products. Humidifier technology has advanced considerably since their installation, and we were able to offer a solution that offered the required RH, but using fewer units.’
