Calor provides the energy for heating and cooling historic castle
Heating and cooling for an historic wing of Leslie Castle in Ireland is provided by the Sanyo gas heat pump fuelled by Calor LPG and using the originally heat emitters.
A new heating and cooling solution for Leslie Castle, an important historic building in Monaghan, Ireland is served by a Sanyo heat pump with its compressor belt-driven by an engine powered by Calor LPG. The new system replaces one installed over a hundred years ago. Because of the narrow design of the Long Gallery Wing, the use of modern radiators would not have been appropriate. It was originally heated by underfloor grilles and through window boxes. The system recommended by Calor uses this original equipment without spoiling the appearance of this section of the castle. The engine-powered heat pump reduces the site’s electricity demand. Heat from the air and recovered waste heat from the combustion process is reused by the system, which Sanyo says gives heating efficiencies of over 140%. The LPG tanks are underground, with the area landscaped in keeping with the rest of the estate. Brian Derham, Calor’s Ireland regional manager, says, ‘We have worked alongside the Leslie family throughout the restoration project to recommend energy solutions based on the castle estate’s very specific requirements. ‘Using LPG with the Sanyo gas heat pump has provided an excellent combined renewable system while not spoiling the look and character of this wonderful estate. ‘We believe LPG is now very much the fuel of choice for applications located in areas without mains gas.’
