Teesside hospital boasts one of largest LonWorks networks in the world
With over 8000 LonMark products, the James Cook University Hospital has one of the largest LonWorks networks in the world.
One of the largest LonWorks open building control networks in the world serves the James Cook University Hospital of South Tees Hospital Trust. It comprises over 8000 interoperable LonMark products in 30 sub-systems to manage HVAC, lighting, security and alarms on critical medical systems. Greg Harrison, director of Jade BMS of Hartlepool, which installed the system and maintains it, explains. ‘The building systems contract for the hospital specified LonWorks so it would not be tied to products from specific manufacturers. The systems integrate, monitor and control all the hospital HVAC, lighting, security, elevators and power centre, as well as alarms on critical medical systems — including cryogenic stores, blood banks, medical gases and uninterruptible power supplest and isolated power supplies.’ The James Cook Hospital is the result of a £137 million PFI-funded project for South Tees Hospital NHS Trust. It combines three hospitals on one site in Middlesbrough by refurbishing the existing South Cleveland Hospital and constructing an additional 63 000 m2 alongside to create a 145 000 m2 complex with over a thousand beds.
