Batt Cables wins battle against power cuts

Batt Cables
Standby power to ensure the continuous operation of the headquarters of Batt Cables is provided by three Scorpion Powerhouse generators.
To avoid disruption from power blackouts and brownouts at its UK headquarters, Batt Cables has installed standby generators to cover three key areas of its site at Erith in Kent. This 11.5 acre site is the centre of operations for the company’s seven stocking locations and 12 UK and overseas sales offices. Following an in-depth survey of the site by Scorpion Power Systems, it became apparent that three key areas of the site needed a power-support system. To kick off the project, a Scorpion Powerhouse DV358 3-phase generator and UPS system was installed to support the 3-storey office block and ancillary buildings. The generator is on a raised floor to avoid potential flooding from the nearby River Thames. Brian Hall, maintenance manager for the site, says, ‘Following the installation of this generator, we experienced two successive power cuts. Thanks to the standby system, our employees did not even notice there had been a power cut.’ Two other key facilities on the site now have standby power. The 9600 m2 warehouse has a Powerhouse DV142 3-phase generator to provide power to cable-cutting machines, a 20 t overhead crane, lighting and IT equipment. The transport office and co-ordinates needed for computer ordering have a small Powerhouse DP22 generator. All three generators have a waterproof acoustic canopy, automatic mains failure, water jacket heater to aid cold starting and a steel bund to retain any diesel spillage. They can be monitored remotely and have an annual maintenance contract to ensure that standby power will always be available.
